Bloomberg Calls For Disbanding Of Lower Manhattan Panel

Seeking greater city control over its most high-profile building project, Mayor Bloomberg on Wednesday proposed scaling back a multibillion-dollar transit hub and abolishing the agency that approved redevelopment plans at ground zero. He demanded on Wednesday that the state complete the 9/11 memorial by September 2011 and that the transit hub gets completely redesigned.

In an op-ed piece in The Wall Street Journal, Mr. Bloomberg wrote, “Progress on the redevelopment of the World Trade Center has been frustratingly slow, owing in large part to a multilayered governance structure that has undermined accountability from the get-go.”

The new requests are hardly any groundbreaking ideas. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey are also advocated expediting the construction of the new WTC transportation hub. These statements are expected to be released in a report on September 29th. Though in contrast with the mayors callings, the Port Authority will most likely not be demanding the disbanding of the panel.
