In a letter to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Hillary Clinton expressed her concern over plans to drill in the Marcellus Shale Formation for natural gas in upstate New York. Named after its distinctive outcrop in Marcellus, NY, the shale formation covers a large region of the Northeast United States. While agreeing that drilling provides additional resources, jobs, and boosts the economy clinton went on to caution that “it is essential that we do everything possible to evaluate and mitigate any potential threats that the drilling poses to our water and air quality”.
Citing loose federal regulations along with exceptions made for big oil companies to federal environmental acts, Clinton called for a reassesment on the environmental impact. She also added that with newer technologies drilling doesn’t have to be prevented, but perhaps a compromise in method to minimize potential risks to the water and air.
